Pests for the month still need a professional

Add earwigs to the list of pests wanting to enter your home this month. Large populations can be found in the gap around the edge of your foundation. They don’t really hurt anything and aren’t known to carry any diseases that affect man or his pets. They don’t pinch you.

Most pesticides that can be used on your lawn will be effective on earwigs. One application should be all that is necessary.

Drywood termite swarmers are not unusual this time of year in the Houston area. They come out at night and will fly to light. Their sawdust colored fecal matter will usually help you find the source which is key to getting rid of them. They work slowly so there is no need to rush to treat them. There are plenty of good products to spot treat them but most are only available to professionals so it’s best to call a professional. Stuarts Pest Control has the professionals to deal with these little bugs!

Pest Control Advice for Peak Summer Months

July is a peak month for a large number of exterior and interior pests. If we get rain in the Houston area we will probably see a surge in mosquitoes and large roaches. If it stays dry ants and fleas will likely be the insect pests you encounter.

To minimize mosquito problems make sure your gutters and drains are clear and working properly. Don’t leave water puddles sitting for more than three days. ( potted plant bases, under decks, etc, ). If you are going to treat your own lawn do it at dusk when it will be most effective. Beyond standard good home maintenance, there is not much you can do to prevent the big roaches or ants from coming in. Calling a pro is usually more cost effective.

Using motion sensors on outdoor lights will minimize June bugs and crickets. Spraying your lawn or applying pesticide granules now is a good way to prevent chinch bug and sod web worm damage that shows up after it is too late. Chinch bugs have started to show up in lawns all across Houston

The damage they cause looks the same as drought damage and they tend to infest the same portions of the lawn that are the hottest and driest to start with. Calling a professional pest control or lawn service is the usually the best and quickest way to solve the problem but most of the liquid and granule over the counter pesticide products work well if you apply them correctly. Watering your lawn thoroughly before the pesticide application is very important. Heavy watering the night before a treatment will force the insects to the surface and cause the pesticide to remain liquid longer, making it more effective. Most granules need to be watered in after they are applied as well.  Watering your lawn before you treat for fleas is also very helpful. You can actually drown lots of larvae. Concentrate on the shady areas and where the pets spend most of their time and use lots of water.
